Concert 1 - HUNGARIAN MARCH - Berlioz
Maybe not the best performance ever but it must be remembered taht this was the day after a 30 hour coach journey - everyone was a bit tired!!!
Cimbalom solo
We must find some pieces with this instrument in (Kodaly's Hary Janos Suite?) and someone who plays it!!!
Thank you to Matt and Jono
We left our two drivers in Dover and a different driver took over.
Thank you to Matt and Jono for being such great drivers and a lot of fun.

The journey home....
There were two moments of note on the long journey home....
1) Being pulled over by German Police at 1.30 a.m. for a random spot check.... (luckily they didn't ask for everything to be unpacked and searched)
and
2) When Jennie (flute) realised she had lost her passport at a service station in Austria! (She ended up having to be interviewed by immigration officials in order to be allowed back into the UK!).
After that the 30-odd hours and ferry seemed quite minor - and the M25 kept moving (at least in the direction we were traveling)!>

Beating Mr. S at a drinking competition!!
The idea was to make the most horrible drink from the ingredients available at breakfast - I had to drink a cocktail made of fruit juice, milk, mustard, ketchup and balsamic vinegar!!!

To be continued....
We're not sure when we'll have internet access again (well not sufficient so that we can upload photos and video).
We have loads more stuff to be posted on here (including a stunning piece of singing on the coach and video of the gypsy musicians and dancers).
Everything will be up by the end of the weekend.
Keep checking back for news of when we're on the ferry, etc. but, for now, no more photos or video.
See you in Bakewell at some point on Friday evening!!

Rosa (violin)
Sadly, Rosa (violin) is going home today in order to meet up with family to go on a holiday tomorrow.
One question...
WHY CAN'T WE ALL FLY HOME?

Silence
It was very strange at the concert in St. Michael's Church because the audience applauded every item enthusiastically (and some even gave a standing ovation at the end) but the brass item was greeted with SILENCE!
Maybe they need to practise more?
LOL

Tram
During the day today we won't have the coach (so our drivers can rest before the journey home) so we'll be using the tram to get about.
I really like the tram. Maybe we should have a tram system between Bakewell and Matlock (or, at least, a tram to get us up from town to school!).

Food
The food at the hotel has been quite good though, maybe, a little too stodgy!
The vegetarians seem to have just about every vegetable possible deep-fried at some point!
Lots of us weren't sure about cold soup but quite liked it.

Happy Birthday Steve!!!
Today (Thursday) is Steve (clarinet)'s 18th birthday!
There's a few little surprises for him!

Mrs. Bailey....
Mrs. Bailey says she doesn't want to go back and wants to stay here in Budapest.
We're trying to work out a way to make her wish come true!

Last Night
It was a bit strange.
Wednesday night is our last night here in Budapest but, because of the coach journey, not our last night on tour.
We were allowed a slight extension to our bedtime. :-)

Thunderstorms
Over the past 2 evenings there's been some thunderstorms.
This isn't surprising as it got up to 42 degrees (107.5 F for any adults reading!).
The surprising thing is that we haven't got wet at all. The short rain showers missed us completely!

Poster
Outside St. Michael's Church there was this poster....
... it will make a re-appearance on a wall in the music department in September!!!

Bartok's House
After the concert we had some free time in Budapest to get some food and drink before a short (ish) coach ride to Bartok's House in the Buda hills.
Some of us have been learning some Bartok violin music so it was particularly interesting.
Some of us didn't really know who Bartok was (I blame our teachers LOL) but found that he was a very interesting man.
I'm going to Spotify him when I get back!!!

Concert in St. Michael's Church
Wow! That was amazing!
For the Year 13s (and for our Year 14!) this was their last EVER school concert.
:-(
It was also our last concert in Budapest.
:-(
St. Michael's is a lovely church in Vaci Ut. We had a little bit of time to set up and try out the acoustic - which was beautifully resonant.
Because this was a church performance we couldn't play the film music and, sadly, no Red Dwarf!
Steve (clarinet) narrated Mr. Steadman's piece (On St. Crispin's Day) and we brought the concert to a rousing end with The Pines of Rome.
This concert will be remembered by the orcehstra for quite some time.

Boat cruise on the Danube
What a fun evening we had on the Danube boat cruise!
First there was gypsy musicians playing violin/fiddle, cimbalom (a zither-like instrument) and double bass and then we were entertained by 2 folk dancers.
One of the dances involved the female dancer balancing a bottle on her head while she danced!
We were all invited to join in dancing - and most of us did.
Then we were asked if any of us played violin.... Hannah (violin) was handed the gypsy fiddle and played 3 pieces!
At the end, there was more music.
What a fantastic time - and a little taste of the folklore of Hungary.

Laura (violin) - The Concert in Esztergom
When we arrived for the concert it was so hot.
We set up after a cheeky bit of bus manoeuvering (during which the wing mirror was separated from the body of the bus) and and then we went through a lovely spray thing that sprayed water!
I thought the concert ws really fun and it went very well (Mr. Steadman didn't even have to shout!).
We all had free drinks and our outdoor venue was a bit like Disneyland with all the turrets and colours.
